The Aosta Valley is famous not only for its extraordinary landscapes and amazing cuisine, but also for its history. I can’t think of another place with the same number of castles along the road.
Each castle is unique in its own way. Savoy Castle, for example, is accessible through a narrow winding road into the mountains. In my opinion, this is one of the most “dreamlike” castles in the valley. It stands at the foot of Colle della Ranzola where, in good weather, you have a panoramic view of the whole valley and can see as far as the Liskamm Glacier.
The castle was founded in the 19th century, but at the request of Queen Margaret of Savoy the building was given its “old castle” appearance. Its eclectic style undoubtedly makes the castle stand out among its medieval “brothers”.
You can only enter the castle with a tour guide for 5 euros. The tour is conducted only in Italian every half hour.
All the interior decoration bears homage to its Muse, who is evoked throughout by the eponymous flower or by her initials.
I also noticed an interesting way the queen communicated with the courtiers. In the dining room, at arm’s length from the table there are strings hanging (like those of window blinds) which give a signal when pulled. Each room had its own number, which is how the servants determined in which room the queen was waiting for them.
Another feature of the castle is the absence of a kitchen which was located in a nearby building (nowadays ticket offices and toilets for visitors). A little underground railroad (fr. “décauville”) connected the castle to the kitchens.
In the lower area of the park, a rock-garden has been created with a vast collection of plants from all over the world. Gardens are open all year round, but it is better to plan your visit during the flowering period from May to September.
