It’s hard to imagine that only 70 years ago no one knew about this hidden gem in Thailand except for local fishermen. In the coastal waters of the island, there were many fish, called “Lang”, which is why the consonant name of the island “Rang” came about. Rang Island (Koh Rang) refers to two islands, Koh Rang Yai (Rang big) and Koh Rang Noi (Rang small).
The white sand beaches of the uninhabited island were hidden under pine and coconut trees. In the 90s, seeing the potential of this small piece of land, “Richy Island Phuket” bought the island to further develop eco-tourism. Now the island of Rang Yai is a very touristic place, although not many people know about it.
The beach features a kilometer of sandy beaches on the west side. Sun loungers are provided on the beach, as well as a bar and restaurant. Despite the fact that at first glance the menu seems very “touristy” – with large pictures and prices – the cuisine was delicious!
A souvenir shop and the Phuket pearl farm are also nearby. Since most of the island is still inhabited by dense vegetation, traversable areas can be explored in a few minutes on foot or by bike.
Rank Yai is still considered uninhabited, although it is very crowded during the daytime. Tourist groups drop in here every day on sea excursions around the islands. Motor boats take guests from the nearby Coconut Island while the most independent tourists usually negotiate with private traders at the Laem Hin pier .
Despite the number of visitors, Rang Yai offers seclusion and peace of mind. If you walk 100m, you get a perfect beach to yourself which is also incredibly beautiful! If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend visiting the true paradise island of Rang Yai.
