Located between two lakes, Interlaken in Switzerland lives up to its name. But did you know it has six sister cities around the world? The International Friendship Association Interlaken (IFAI) fosters these global relationships, ensuring a close bond between Interlaken and its sister cities.

Otsu, Japan
Interlaken and Otsu became sister cities in 1978 thanks to a tea school in Otsu. This lakeside town is located in Shiga Prefecture, on the shores of Lake Biwa – Japan’s largest lake. Otsu has gifted Interlaken a beautiful Japanese Garden right next to Hotel Interlaken – a carefully renovated 4-star hotel that dates back to the 14th century!
You’ll also find ships named “Interlaken I” and “Interlaken II” on Lake Biwa, and the Jungfrau Railways even named a train “Otsu” in return. If you’re dreaming of visiting Otsu, these cozy, authentic accommodations make it easy to imagine stepping into local life:

Trebon, Czech Republic
This picturesque spa town in Southern Bohemia joined the Interlaken family in 1994. Trebon is known for its natural beauty, historic charm, and numerous ponds. With about 8,500 residents, it’s a serene getaway spot.

Scottsdale, USA
Interlaken and Scottsdale, Arizona became sister cities in 1999. Suggested by a Swiss local with ties to both cities, Scottsdale is a popular tourist destination just like Interlaken, and is home to around 250,000 people.

Even more incredible Scottsdale stays with chic rooms and desert charm wait here.
Huangshan, China
Linked since 2008, Huangshan in Anhui Province is home to the breathtaking Huangshan mountain range. It is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. The partnership with Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe celebrates the beauty of both mountain worlds. I’ve curated a collection of unique boutique hotels here—authentic, cozy, and full of character:

With so many traditional gems to choose from, why stay anywhere else?
Zeuthen, Germany
The newest sister city, Zeuthen, joined in 2009. This villa suburb southeast of Berlin is known for its beautiful lakeside setting and is a favorite for weekend getaways, especially in warmer months.
I found a few unique stays here. You can sleep on a real boat at Kuhnle-Tours Bootshaus Zeuthen. Relax at the beachfront privately-owned hotel Leutloff’s am See. Or enjoy a spacious two-bedroom apartment Am Stadtrand im Grünen. It is styled in rustic charm with a cozy fireplace.
