When I opened the door to this place, I felt like I was inside an alien’s stomach …
High ceilings decorated with double arches of vertebrae set in a medieval castle. Huge floor-to-ceiling windows framed with bones, faces frozen with fear on the walls, and a graphite floor covered with incomprehensible scripts as if they were from another world. The creator behind this scary interior is Swiss artist Hans Rudolf Giger. Known for the “Alien” movies, Giger depicted his vision of the next step in evolution – the symbiosis of man and machine into new forms of beings.
Following tradition, like Dali in Spain, the artist also built his own museum. Giger restored 4 floors of a medieval castle in the Swiss city of Gruyères. The museum itself is a work of art, because the author spent almost 40 years of his life on its creation! Although, Giger himself explained such an idea from a purely practical point of view. Art lovers would like to see the originals firsthand, and museums could only house part of the collection. In order for all the works to be presented at the same time and for the author to control the conditions for keeping the exhibits, a permanent exhibition was opened.
Giger’s surreal paintings & sculptures may seem strange and even scary as he always anticipated what would scare people in a way that only true artists could.
