Carthage: a budget-friendly adventure and travel tips

Carthage, Tunisia

Are you looking for an exciting and affordable day trip in Tunisia? Look no further than Carthage!

Carthage - Карфаген-The Roman bath

This remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site is a treasure trove of ancient wonders that won’t break the bank. With a ticket costing less than 4 dollars, you can immerse yourself in the rich history and explore incredible sites like the Byrsa quarter, the Antonine baths, the Roman villas, the Roman theatre, the amphitheater, and more.

Byrsa quarter

Start your adventure in the fascinating Byrsa quarter, a public area that extends halfway up Byrsa Hill. It was a bustling residential neighborhood in Hannibal’s time, with streets, multi-story buildings, and shops. Despite being burnt down in 146 B.C., the quarter’s remains provide a glimpse into urban life during the 2nd century B.C. A building nearby is the Carthage National Museum which is closed since 2020.

The Antonine Baths

Built between 145 and 162 A.D., the Antonine baths are a remarkable sight and the third largest baths in the world. Despite being buried for centuries, their basement reveals the complex infrastructure that once powered this magnificent complex.

The Roman Villas

As you continue your exploration, make sure to visit the Roman villas that stretch beyond the baths. These well-preserved structures offer insights into Carthage’s urban plan and the lifestyle of its citizens. From the schola, a seat of patriotic-religious celebrations, to the stunning Byzantine-style basilica, each building paints a vivid picture of the city’s vibrant past.

The Roman theatre

The Roman theatre was constructed under the reign of Hadrian, and later destroyed by the Vandals, it still stands as a magnificent structure. And if you’re lucky to visit during the summer, the theatre hosts the renowned Carthage International Festival.

Amphitheater

Make a stop at the amphitheater, built in the 2nd century A.D., that once hosted thrilling spectacles and gladiatorial contests. Explore its massive foundations and underground rooms and imagine the roaring crowds.

Tophet

The bravest could also visit the Punic necropolis, known as the Tophet, where urns containing the ashes of noble families’ first-born children were buried.

Carthage’s ancient wonders go beyond this short blog post. The Magon Quarter, the building with columns, the Punic ports – there’s so much to see and experience! So, check out my travel tips below to be ready for a day of adventure and discovery that won’t dent your wallet.

Travel tips

Here are some money-saving tips for your day exploring Carthage’s attractions:

  1. Hire a taxi driver: Instead of hiring a private guide for a hefty price, consider hiring a taxi driver who can chauffeur you between each site. Look for yellow taxi drivers at the entrance of the historical sites and negotiate a price. The driver will wait for you outside while you explore, maximizing your time and energy and ensuring a seamless and efficient adventure through the ancient wonders of Carthage.
  2. Use the same ticket for all the archaeological park sightseeing. Even if you are offered a new ticket at the entrance of each site, show your existing ticket. This will save you money and allow you to explore all the incredible attractions within the park.
  3. Ask for a booklet or audio guide: While there might not be a booklet or audio guide readily available, don’t hesitate to ask the staff if they have any additional resources. Often, they are accommodating and may offer a personal tour or provide interesting insights beyond the dry facts. If you receive excellent service, remember to tip at the end of the tour as a gesture of appreciation.
  4. Check the opening hours here (sorry I could only find the 2021 schedule but it was the same during my trip in 2023)

By following these money-saving tips, you can have a cost-effective and enriching experience while exploring the fascinating history of Carthage.
