For only one weekend, Grand-Place in Brussels blooms with 1 million begonias! Today I would like to share my experience and tips to make your flower carpet 2022 visit more enjoyable!
Flower Carpet is laid out at the center of the Grand Place of Brussels every even year. On Friday morning, 120 volunteers construct a 77m by 24 m carpet with nearly 1 million begonias in less than 4 hours! Why Begonias? Belgium is the world’s largest producer with more than 35 million bulbs per year (with nearly 80% of production in Ghent only).
This year Flower Carpet will take place from 12 to 15 August 2022 and is free to access for everybody. There are no opening hours, however, you might be interested to check the program with the opening ceremony and light show hours.
The 2022 pattern is entitled “Arabesques “. All the elements of this year’s edition will mimic the very first Flower Carpet from 1971, including Archangel Michael and the Belgian lion.
As a foretaste of the Flower Carpet, from 1 to 15 August 2022, the center of Brussels will also be decorated by a flower trail, which starts at the Grand-Place.
This 25-minute walk takes visitors through the surrounding streets to discover arrangements by Belgian florists. Follow the ‘Brussels in Bloom’ route map
Last but not least, I would like to share a few tips from my trip…
Watch in the comfort of your home
If you can not visit the Flower Carpet 2022, you can still watch the construction and the result live via the webcam linked here.
View from the top
For the elevated view of the carpet, go upstairs to any of the nearby cafes on Grand Place. Or you can buy a ticket to the balcony of the Town Hall.
Accommodation
Due to the numerous visitors and the high demand for accommodations during the festival days, I would recommend booking your hotel well in advance.
