Jerusalem is an incredible place with a three-thousand-year history. Since one day is not enough to get to know the city, here are 10 things that you can not miss.
- See The Immovable Ladder
The ladder is referred to as “immovable” due to an understanding that no one may move the ladder without consent of all six Christian orders in Jerusalem. If you move this ladder, religious conflict would be unavoidable!
- Place a note into a crevice on the Western Wall
The Western Wall contains thousands of papers. People write their prayers to God on a piece of paper, fold it and place into the cracks carefully so that none of the notes touch. Those who cannot visit the Wall can send their notes online.
- The faithful wash their hands before entering the Wailing Wall.
- Do not turn your back to the relics.
When leaving, slowly walk backwards away from the Wallas a sign of respect.
- Can you call it a loaf or not?
- Streets under control
Police control the flow of locals (hurrying home after the service) and tourists by blocking narrow streets with iron barriers.
- Jerusalem – the cradle of the three monotheistic religions
To understand how so many religions fit in such a small space, one can only visit Jerusalem.
- When visiting Jerusalem, you will get to know the many branches of Christianity.
Six confessions of the Christian church (Greek Orthodox, Catholic, Armenian, Ethiopian, Syrian, and Coptic) use the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, each with its own area and hours of service. Such strict separation provokes conflicts between representatives of denominations, remember The Immovable Ladder? (see point 1)
- Have you seen the symbol of Jerusalem?
The lion is depicted on both the city’s coat of arms, and on numerous streets, squares and drainage hatches.
- On the second Friday of Ramadan, you can only enter the city by public transport, so avoid traffic jams!
Have you been to Jerusalem? Share your observations in the comments!
Cheers!
