First Easy Step To Start A Greener Lifestyle

Some of you may know that for the last couple of years I have made some changes toward a greener lifestyle. That doesn’t only include recycling, repurposing, and reusing but also replacing chemical products with more eco-friendly ones. Recently I’ve read an article that says if you can replace only one product with a chemical-free option,  start with your laundry detergent. I’m definitely not an expert on this, rather I’m just beginning my journey to get rid of toxins in my home.

After a few trials and errors in making my own cleaning products, I have finally found a recipe that works. You’d be surprised how simple it is to make your own powder detergent. This recipe makes soapy yet effective detergent that I use for machine and hand washing. Make sure to wear gloves and avoid direct contact with your skin.

Ingredients

  • 600 g Marseille soap in flakes
  • 600 g baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, or NaHCO₃)
  • 480 g soda ash (sodium carbonate, or Na₂CO₃)
  • 240 g percarbonate of soda (sodium percarbonate (Na₂CO₃ 1.5H₂O₂)

Optional:

  • 60 drops of lavender essential oil (aromatic )
  • 60 drops of tea tree essential oil (antiseptic)

Directions

  1. Mix the powders and soap together in a jar.
  2. Add 30 drops of each oil, close the jar and shake in all directions to mix.
  3. Repeat step 2 for the remaining drops.
  4. Your natural laundry detergent is ready! Store in a dry container with a serving spoon.
