5 herbs you can easily grow to spice up your TexMex dishes

Growing fresh herbs in your garden is not only a fun hobby but can also save you time, money and spike up the flavour of many dishes. Here are 5 herbs that will give your meal a Tex-Mex touch.

Cilantro

Fresh cilantro is the most popular herb that you can add into spicy foods! It will add a unique flavour to your guacamole, give some zing to your tortilla soup and fresh touch to your tacos! The seeds of cilantro are known as coriander and also very popular in southern cuisine.

Pepper

Technically pepper is a fruit but they are perfect for a mini garden. Must haves are chili peppers, jalapeños, habanero and their sweet brother bell peppers. I love this healthy nachos recipe where you can replace chips for colourful bell peepers. Also, check out this jalapeño margarita cocktail to accompany your favourite dish.

Tip!

Try not to plant mild and hot peppers next to each other to avoid cross pollination.

Celery

Celery can be easily recognised by its strong flavour. Juicy bite-size celery sticks are perfect for a healthy snack on its own or with a ranch dip.

Mint

Refreshing cold mint tea or water with lime and mint is best to quench your thirst on a hot summer day. You can even use it for drinks like mojitos or mint juleps to accompany your TexMex cooking.

Tip!

If you grow mint, remember that it’s considered an invasive plant. Mint will spread and take over your garden. It’s best grown in containers.

Cumin

Plant cumin in a pot or a corner of the vegetable garden where it will have access to light and loose soil. Ground cumin seeds add a deep earthy note to many meat dishes so add it next time you make beef or chicken fajitas.
