Over the past few years, every December, I jet off to warm Texas and then fly to snowy Siberia on the opposite side of the planet. Throughout these years, I’ve tried various ways of packing for three different climate zones (including Europe), and today, I want to share my observations with you.

Versatility

I used to always pack skirts and dresses because I love wearing them, but what’s crucial while traveling is versatility. When I started packing only pants and tops, the weight of my suitcase noticeably decreased.

Layers, layers, layers

The most obvious observation is fewer layers in summer and more in winter.

Materials

When choosing materials, it’s essential to be rational and prefer lightweight fabrics. In my suitcase for 3 climates, I swapped wool sweaters for cashmere and knitted  tops for silk or cotton t-shirts.

Volume

Usually, I try not to pack bulky items, but recently, I’ve enjoyed using packing cubes. They significantly reduce the size of clothing and can also secure delicate items or gifts. By the way, packing cubes are a fantastic idea for traveler gifts!

Stores have everything

Sometimes, I don’t bring a winter jacket or boots at all. I have a box with necessary items at my relatives’ place, and at times, I buy things when I reach my destination. That way, I don’t drag heavy winter gear around when I’m basking in the sun somewhere else.

What packing hacks do you use?
