The best-kept breakfast secret in the Swiss Alps

Habkern, Switzerland

Forget hotel buffets—this is the most authentic breakfast you’ll have in Switzerland.

This alpine experience isn’t exactly easy to reach, but it’s totally worth it! Alp Heubühlen is located at 1,331 meters, and getting there is part of the adventure. We hiked about 20 minutes from the nearest parking lot, through meadows and fresh mountain air, before arriving at this summer-only gem.

From June to September, the Brunner family calls this working alp home. You can watch cheese being made in the traditional way, chat with the dairyman, and enjoy a homemade alpine breakfast or panoramic views of the Bernese Alps from a deck chair.

Breakfast? Fresh alpine cheese, local vegetables, crusty bread, homemade jams, eggs straight from the chicken coop, and butter so creamy it tastes like a sweet whisper of alpine fields. It’s the definition of farm-to-table.

You can also savor raclette, herb fondue, or a cheese board on the terrace. And yes, reservations are a must—this spot is no secret to the locals, but for everyone else, it’s the hidden gem you didn’t know you needed.

Alessia’s tip: Bring a hat, sunscreen, your camera, and a healthy appetite. If you have a Habkern, Interlaken, or Beatenberg guest card, you’ll even get a free stable visit, a piece of alp cheese, and a deck chair for the day.
