Spotted! Manhattan

Manhattan is an ever-changing place.  Here are my top 10 observations from my recent visit to Manhattan.

1. Love is in the air? Or is it bacon?

Mmmmm….Manhattan is such a tasty-smelling place! Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by how good the Big Apple can smell! Odors of delicious food reach you everywhere – from a fancy restaurant, a little café around the corner, or a food booth!

The concentration of street food vendors in NYC is enormous. City authorities cap the number of food vendors at 3,100 permits a year, which makes the food industry highly competitive and, consequently, very good!

2. Sun in the city

Yellow cabs are everywhere! They bring unique charm to the streets and completely modernize the city atmosphere. I find yellow taxis as important as any other famous landmarks in NYC!

Originally the taxis were not yellow, but John D. Hertz popularized the idea from a study that found yellow with a touch of red was the most visible color over greater distances.  And look what they are now!

3. Manhattan is very loud… Very… Loud…

New York never sleeps… You might think twice before opening the hotel window for fresh air … Ambulance and police sirens, car horns honking… at your disposal…24/ 7…

4. Window opening is under control 😉

Want to take a picture of the sunset from your hotel room without window reflections?  That can be difficult! To reduce accidental window falls, hotels are equipped with devices that limit the opening of a window to 100mm.  To the rooftop!

5. There is no Wal-Mart in Manhattan…

I just wonder why?!

6. Street distribution is “rustic”…

People will be approaching you on the streets trying to sell everything – the most charismatic sellers usually get business.

7. Good old Broadway musical vs. Statue of Liberty

You can get Broadway tickets online or at the theater on the same day as the show. However, for tickets to enter the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you should plan to reserve at least 3 months in advance (depending on the season)!

8. Broadway is actually a long way…

Did you know that Broadway is the longest street in Manhattan at 53 km long?

9. One World Tower has 2 plane silhouettes

When viewed from the ground level, the One World Trade Center tower appears to ascend as a pyramid with silhouettes of two airplanes… A small but meaningful visual illusion.

10. Air-raid shelters can be very photogenic

Don’t you think?

That was it!

Bonus question for most attentive readers: can you spot a turtle in the picture below?

If yes, then leave your comment below or share what you spotted in Manhattan.

Cheers!

A.
